Autodesk Vault is a PDM system that is primarily used for storing and reusing engineering data and technical documents, but can also manage other files. The system enables central storage, version control, traceability, and data revision. Engineering teams can collaborate efficiently, track changes, and ensure that they are always working with the latest files.

Vault works as a central database for engineering files. The software solution stores engineering data, manages versions and revisions, and controls access (check-in and check-out). Changes are documented in a traceable way so that teams can work together efficiently. Vault integrates seamlessly with other Autodesk products and automates many processes.

Autodesk Vault seamlessly integrates data and processes, accelerates projects through centralized management (single source of truth, SSOT) and automated workflows, and enables efficient engineering workflows. Versioning, revision control, access control, and traceability ensure greater security and productivity throughout the development process. Vault also enables ISO 9001-compliant data storage.

Vault is a PDM system designed specifically for managing technical data. It supports the organization, versioning, revisioning, and collaboration of engineering files. Unlike a PLM system, Vault focuses on managing engineering data, not the entire product lifecycle.

PLM deals with the entire process from research and development to product end-of-life, while PDM focuses entirely on engineering. However, Vault offers more than just data management. With its article management and change management (ECOs) functions, the system provides two features that go beyond classic PDM functionalities.

Interfaces or additional solutions such as Autodesk Fusion Manage extend the core functions of Vault to map additional processes throughout the entire product lifecycle. This makes Vault the foundation of the entire corporate strategy.

Autodesk Vault Thin Client is a web-based application that allows users without CAD software to access stored project data (“read-only” access). Thin Client enables users to search, view, and track files and items directly in their browser without a license—ideal for colleagues in administration, purchasing, or production who need information but are not actively engineering.

Vault Basic and Vault Professional differ in terms of their range of functions.

Vault Basic provides basic data management for individual users or small teams.

Vault Professional expands on this with features such as status-based revision control, BOM management, and change processes. Vault Professional can also be connected to other systems in your company via an interface. This makes the software solution ideal for complex projects, processes, and companies.
