AI dominates today’s industrial debate. Yet in machine building and plant engineering, the reality is more nuanced: Progress is visible, but reliable, scalable use in day-to-day operations remains the exception.
“Currently, I see very few companies that are already using AI to create sustainable value,” says Rolf Lisse. Robert Weigl adds: “Looking across the Atlantic often seems more promising than the reality actually is.” For decision-makers, the key takeaway is clear: Technology itself is rarely the bottleneck. The real challenge is integrating it systematically into stable, scalable processes.
Structured data and processes form the foundation for economically viable AI implementation. “AI isn’t a miracle cure; it’s a tool for increasing efficiency,” explains Robert Weigl. “Without accurate, digitized data, AI can’t put the information into context,” adds Michael Bauerhaus.
AI is not the starting point—it is a consequence of process maturity. Companies that do not have a firm grasp of their data sources, responsibilities, and system landscapes will not solve structural weaknesses through AI. Only when data is consistent and processes are clearly defined does technology become a driver of productivity.
